You’ve probably heard a few nonchalant words from people with glowing skin about how they’re “just lucky” when it comes to beautiful, glowing skin. Others go on and on about expensive skin care treatments that keep them looking their healthiest. We roll our eyes at those lucky souls and secretly curse their good fortune.
But the truth is that it isn’t just genetics that play a role in healthy, beautiful skin. It is also environmental factors as well as diet, and that’s something most of us tend to forget.
Here are a few beauty hacks that contribute to firm, glowing skin that most of us tend to forget.
Before you roll your eyes, hear me out. If you want skin to look its best make sure you’re keeping it clean…regularly. That means making a point to wash your face every morning and every evening, with a cleanser that matches your skin type.
Clean skin is less susceptible to breakouts—especially those oil loving zits—which is why it is such an important part of your everyday beauty regimen. It doesn’t matter if you use an expensive designer cleanser or something you pick up at the local drugstore. Try it all until you find something that cleans without giving your skin that tight, too clean, feeling.
Bonus hack: Keep makeup remover wipes beside your bed for those nights when you don’t feel like going through the whole end of day beauty regimen.
Unless you’re crazy rich and can afford to simply toss out your makeup brushes every few months, invest in a proper cleaner for your brushes. Those things absorb oil and dirt that you apply not only back to your skin but also into all of your makeup. That means constant breakouts that never seem to go away.
Find a professional grade disinfectant meant for makeup brushes and use it regularly.
I know what you’re thinking, who needs SPF when they spend all day in the office? Think of the sun as you would a driver on the road; if you can see the sun then the sun can get to your skin. That means choosing makeup and skin care products that also have SPF. You don’t need to go crazy with SPF 90, just a basic 20 or 30 to give you a little additional protection against harmful rays.
It doesn’t matter how fair or dark your skin is, we could all use a little extra SPF in our lives.
Unless you are like me, a hands free addict, you should make sure that trusty smartphone is properly cleaned. Everyday. That screen gets filled with gunk from your makeup, your dirty hands, sitting your phone wherever you please and don’t forget the dirtiest part of your body; your hands!
As much as we all love our phones, they are quite filthy. Save yourself a breakout, an unfortunately placed zit and clogged pores by using a wipe across your screen at least once a day.
Oh and stop using your phone without washing your hands!
We’re all guilty of it, swiping a finger under our eyes to make sure your mascara is running down your face or under your lips for that lipstick spread. But as I said before, hands are really filthy things that should never touch sensitive skin unless freshly washed.
Think of all the places your hands land each day; doorknobs, elevator buttons, money, other people’s hands. Then imagine putting all those germs and dirt right back onto your face. Yuck, right?
Well this is a basic tenet of skincare that can go a long way to making sure you have the skin you want.
Whether you’re trying to lose weight, rehydrate or achieve better skin, water is always part of the equation. It’s moisture and with all the toxins in our environment our skin needs as much moisture as it can get, whether from moisturizer or plain old water.
I won’t tell you exactly how much to drink each day because—apparently—the jury is still out on that. But I will tell you that odds are good that you’re not drinking enough. So skip that bottle of soda or that extra espresso and fill up on water.
Your skin will thank you for it.
