5 Foods Your Skin Needs EVERYDAY

We do a lot in our lives in order to sure we have smooth, youthful and clear skin from sun up to sun down every day of our lives. We buy serums, masks, cleansers, toners and exfoliates just to get ideal skin. We make sure we drink lots of water to keep skin healthy and moist, limit our alcohol intake—mostly—and try weird concoctions simply because they might work.

But there’s one aspect of our daily lives that we do, three times a day, without regard to how it may impact our skin.

In a word, diet.

That’s right. Skin isn’t just the face and neck, the hands. It is from your scalp to the bottom of your feet and everywhere in between. Everything you put in your body has an impact on your skin, so why not add a few key foods that will contribute to healthy, glowing skin?

Cucumber

When it comes to smooth, wrinkle-free skin hydration is where its at! Filled with antioxidants and enzyme-rich water, cucumbers are the go-to vegetable when you need to make sure you keep your skin hydrated. Whether you suffer from dry skin or you know you’re not getting enough water in your daily diet adding cucumber is a simple way to up your moisture factor.

How to eat it

  • Chop ¼ cup on top of your salad.
  • Season with salt & pepper and balsamic vinegar.
  • Peel & chop ½ cup and add it to your favorite melon smoothie.
  • Combine it with watermelon for a tasty hydrating snack.

Pineapple

Enzymes in pineapples boost the production of collagen, you know that incredible protein that keeps your skin plump and firm and youthful. Plus pineapples have anti-inflammatory properties that help prevent acne, sun damage, uneven skin tone and fine lines. Thanks to bromelain, you’ll have softer skin that’s less prone to swelling.

How to eat it

  • Put ½ cup in your smoothie
  • Eat ½ cup for your midday sugar fix
  • Two words: fruit salad

Spinach

If you love nothing more than spending an afternoon outdoors, add this dark leafy green to your daily rotation. Full of vitamins that protect the skin from sun damage, boost collagen production and reduce the appearance of dark spots, spinach is kind of a skin care rock star.

Spinach is effective for clearing up acne and thanks to vitamin K and folate, it can help clear up your complexion by eliminating the appearance dark circles and sun spots. Thanks to all the vitamin C, spinach is also great for the repair of skin cells.

How to eat it

  • Use it as the greens in your salad
  • Steam it and season it for your vegetable side
  • Grab a rinsed handful and add it to pasta

Blueberries

I personally am a big proponent of blueberries because they have so many antioxidant properties that help skin by fighting against those pesky free radicals swirling around everywhere you go. Then there’s the vitamin C that improves the production of collagen, which gives skin that supple, youthful look. Then there’s the fiber as with all the foods on this list, that promotes good digestive health.

Why is that important? Because getting rid of toxins you ingest—including greasy food, tobacco, alcohol and other junk—requires good digestive health. If you want to give your diet a double dose of the purple stuff, add purple cabbage to your diet as well.

How to eat it

  • Add a handful to your oatmeal or smoothie
  • Eat a handful for a snack
  • Salad topper
  • Frozen yogurt

Kale

I know, I know. Whenever someone says the word ‘kale’ to me I roll my eyes and groan too. But I blame that on my taste buds because when it comes to kale, you can believe the hype. This deep dark leafy green is packed with minerals and vitamins, specifically vitamins A, B, C and K. In fact you can get all the vitamin K you need for the day with just one serving of kale. Then there are the antioxidants and phytonutrients that help tighten pores, promote collagen production, reduce dark circles, repairs skin cells and detoxifies your skin.

Now you can see why your friend with the luminescent skin is always carting around that dark green drink she swears is a smoothie.

How to eat it

  • Salad greens
  • Braised with apples and onions
  • Add 1 cup to minestrone soup

How many of these foods do you feed your skin on a daily basis? Give yourself a 30-day challenge and see if you can notice the difference!
